Once diagnosed with epilepsy, many people feel anxious, vulnerable and uninformed. By talking with one another in support groups, the fear and misunderstanding can be replaced with caring concern and accurate information. Our support groups meet once a month at our office. There is no preregistration and no charge. We welcome anyone interested in listening, learning, and sharing. We focus on providing information, support and encouragement. For more information about the Epilepsy Support Group meetings, contact Janice at 230-2764, 1-866-EPILEPSY, during office hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and or by email. Cassidy Megan is a nine year old from Nova Scotia. Sound pretty normal? She is everything but! Last year, she dreamed up an amazing initiative called Purple Day as a way of telling others about epilepsy. She ended up taking the world by storm! The day quickly became a worldwide awareness raising campaign on which everyone is encouraged to wear purple (or lavender) because it is the international color for epilepsy.
Cassidy’s Story"Hi, my name is Cassidy Megan. I’m nine years old and I have epilepsy. I started Purple Day because I wanted to tell everyone about epilepsy, especially that all seizures are not the same and that people with epilepsy are ordinary people just like everyone else. I also wanted kids with epilepsy to know that they are not alone. Before I started Purple Day, I was afraid to tell people about my epilepsy because I thought they would make fun of me. After the Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia did a presentation in my class, I started to talk with the other kids about my seizures. That is when I decided to become a spokesperson for kids with epilepsy. When I’m not in school or working on Purple Day, I like to act. I have been in a couple of commercials and was the lead in a movie featured in the Atlantic Film Festival. I also like to play outdoors with my friends, take care of my four pets and cheerlead. My favourite thing to do is spend time with my family." Stay tuned to our website to find out what the Epilepsy Association of Calgary is going to do for Purple Day. And don’t forget, wear purple on March 26 – and encourage others (your classroom, workplace) to do the same!! This is a GREAT opportunity to raise epilepsy awareness!
